the men I’ve had, the music I have…
One of the great things about my relationships has been the music I’ve inherited over the years. Through different boyfriends, I have been introduced to everyone from The Ataris to Rachel Yamagata, Flogging Molly to Dashboard Confessional, Beastie Boys, and most recently Alexi Murdoch and Elliot Smith.
Of course there have also been many relationships that I have taken very little from in terms of music (yes, you guys who listen the to electro-clash and house music while in an actual house), but even so, each person has exposed me to something new and for that, I am grateful.
A lot can be said for a shared interest in music. Music sets, enhances and alters our moods whether we’re in the office, at home, in the subway, dining or even shopping – and if you find someone who enjoys listening to the same things as you do, well, that’s a connection right there (and yet another thing that I’d say is worth listening to).
Now just as a scent can capture (and later remind us) of a moment in time, so can a song. There are certain songs that always remind me of certain nights – and there are certain moments within certain songs that remind me of very particular experiences. And even though I might not be able to relive those moments, I’m happy to have them carefully preserved through music.
