{bio} Just Another Girl in the City…

full about, contact, etc...Although I was raised in Hawaii, I consider Manhattan home now. My shoe size is 38/8, I take my coffee black with two sugars, I love reading science fiction, and I’m a scorpio. I’m fairly obsessed with fashion and can name most of the models on the runways. Some of my favorite labels include Prada, Jil Sander, Bottega Veneta, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, and Helmut Lang.

My love affair with fashion began back in college when I took a part-time sales position at Neiman Marcus. All day long I’d slip into a new Dolce dress or test out the latest Manolos downstairs – but what I really fell for was Prada. The 2003 fall collection was one I’ll never forget… I saw the prints inspired by the peacock revolution of the 60′s and fell head over heels hard. I bought the funnel-neck coat with the perfect leather knot toggle buttons, 2 pairs of pumps along with their matching purses, a simple black nylon taco clutch and more; I took sip after sip of peach champagne while watching my credit card being gleefully swiped away. It was during my time at Neiman’s that I realized that my sick little addiction was actually a serious passion worth pursuing.

After earning my degrees in Political Science, English and Women’s Studies back home at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I shipped 16 boxes full of clothing, shoes and handbags from Honolulu to New York without ever having gone to the East Coast before. I found a studio near the corner of 54th Street and 9th Avenue and promptly began living my life as if I fell right out of Sex and the City.

Once I spent everything I had on 5th Avenue, I realized that I needed to get serious about my life and took an unpaid internship position at a prominent NYC showroom and began serving tables at nights. I was given a crash course in fashion pr at my internship and three months later I accepted my first “real job” as in-house Public Relations Manager for Abaeté (what was then just a budding line of beautiful high-end contemporary women’s rtw and swim). The position quickly grew into Director of Public Relations and Marketing and I handled everything from securing national print media features, to coordinating shows during New York Fashion Week in the Tents. While working at Abaeté is something I’ll always cherish, I left after three years to focus on my writing at the suggestion and urging of a friend/editor.

Now, I have interviewed and written featured profiles on everyone from Oscar de la Renta to Thakoon Panichgul, Isaac Mizrahi to artist Sophie Matisse, as well as written numerous style, decor and gifting guides (visit my online portfolio for a selection of some of my work). I worked as the Editorial Writer for Vivre, and am now the Director of Editorial Strategy at StyledOn. And while I am very happy working as a professional editor and writer, I still feel a little caged by assignments and professional restrictions, and therefore created ThoseExtra4Inches as a place to truly express myself.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the site and that it inspires you to spend way too much money on at least one fabulous pair of heels! Please contact me if you’re interested in working together – I now also do personal styling/shopping, graphic design, and lots of freelance writing. As always, thank you for reading! Xx
