Life Recap: StyledOn, Fashion Week, True Blood & More

Monday, August 31st, 2009

true blood14 300x250 Life Recap: StyledOn, Fashion Week, True Blood & MoreSame old story here: I’ve been neglecting my darling blog because I’ve been focusing on StyledOn.com, moving into my new apartment (finally feeling settled in), and getting ready for the upcoming fashion week (which is going to be insane – I’m up to 24 shows already and a lot of invitations haven’t even been sent out yet)!

I also managed to score some amazing finds at H&M recently, make a huge batch of bruschetta (which I haven’t done in years), sell a table on craigslist, fall deeper in love with True Blood, and try out the as-seen-on-tv Smooth Away hair remover.

And aside from staying awake & working every night until 3:30m, I feel I’m balancing work, family, friends and my boyfriend relatively well…sort of. I still haven’t booked my tickets to go back home for my (gulp) 10th year high school reunion. Gonna be Romy & Michele fo’ real!

BTW: I know some people out there are still twitter-phobes, but seriously, if you want to know what I’m into, follow me as I twitter for StyledOn…Xx

Call it Puppy Love…

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Havanese Puppy - CrosbyLast Friday, my boyfriend and I picked up the newest member of our family at the airport – a sweet little Havanese furball named Crosby.

After searching far and wide for the little guy for the past couple months, we picked him up on a sunny morning and he is simply everything we hoped for and more.

Getting a puppy is in so many ways similar to having a baby (and I would know as I now have both); We spent hours deciding upon a name, which was of course settled upon the night before. We had to puppy-proof our apartments. We had to research and buy him the  best bed, toys, special food, bowls, carrier, etc.

We have taken something like 1,765 pictures of him already.  We obviously think that he is so much better than every other puppy that has ever been born - ever.

This morning, our little Mr. Perfect had diarrhea an hour before I had a deadline. Runny and smelly, his poo ended up on the wee-pads (yay!) and on the carpet (no!). Then he tried to eat British Vogue and my pillow (drop it!) before rummaging through my immense scarf collection and biting at my favorite ring from Baccarat. Needless to say, my deadline was pushed back.

And although there are now millions of tiny pieces of shreaded paper all over my apartment and things that were once mine have now been deemed his, he is still the cutest puppy that ever was and ever will be. Right now, he is fast asleep near my foot and looks darling.

If you do not have a puppy I suggest you get one immediately - no pair of shoes has ever made me this happy.

M.I.A.

Monday, July 6th, 2009

So I’ve completely abandoned my darling blog for the past 1o days. And although I’m sure I’ve lost my entire readership during these recent days, I’m ready now to play a bit of catch up…here is a glimpse of things I’ve already done, but haven’t told you about yet (and plan to do so in the near future):

  • had my hair colored by the fabulous Joel Warren at his salon (Warren-Tricomi) at the Plaza Hotel – I am now a hot blond
  • had silver mirrored Minx Nails applied at ‘Cure Beauty Bar and for eight whole days my nails were as fabulous as Lady Gaga’s, Beyonce’s, and Rihanna’s
  • went to the Invader opening at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery [rubix cube + album covers = art]
  • fell in love with The High Line
  • saw the hoppin’ frog exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History
  • found a great bikini top at Victoria’s Secret for just $14
  • discovered new addictive apps for my iPhone (while getting a lovely sunburn)
  • came up with a great idea that will make me rich enough to wear Lanvin every day

What have you been up to? Oh right. You all stopped reading my blog by now. Boo.

Um, No. Harem Pants are not Sexy.

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

00050m Um, No. Harem Pants are not Sexy.Melissa Magsaysay of the LA Times is convinced that harem pants can be sexy - I am not.

In her article, Magsaysay states, “When harem pants came down the runways at Chloé and Alexander McQueen for spring 2009, they somehow glided past the cartoony pop culture associations (Barbara Eden’s Jeannie in the ’60s, MC Hammer’s ’80s gold) to help define summer’s effortlessly slouchy look.”

She acknowledges the fact that they are hideously unattractive, sighting that “[t]hey tend to make the hips, rear and thighs look larger while making legs seem shorter,” but then insists that we give them a try as they (her words, not mine) “are a great way to mix up the predictable pieces of the season and add something daring to a wardrobe.”

I have never understood the appeal of harem pant and I never, ever will. The name is awful and the design is even worse. A cross between a skirt and a pair of cigarette pants, the harem is made for comfort, if anything. The legs, from the knees down, are fitted, while the crotch area is loose and baggy as it it were cut to be a skirt. This style of trouser was customarily worn by Peruvian women until about 1890, when the ruler Nair-Ne-Din saw a Parisian ballet, came to his senses, and ordered all women to wear short skirts in place of these shalwar pants. Revived by MC Hammer in the 1980s, the dreadful style seems 2 legit 2 quit.

Magsaysay insists that “[y]ou can make these pants look chic and flattering — it’s all a matter of balancing proportions and adding the right accessories so the statement is bold, not ‘I Dream of Jeannie.’” Well, no offense, but it is always a matter or balancing proportions and adding the right accessories when it comes to styling.

I guess I’m just really confused as to why the piece ever ran…the accompaying images don’t do anything to covince me of the style’s allure, which they should have, but whatever – this isn’t the NY Times, so I’ll just let it go. Lets leave this style on the runway. If you really want to add something ‘daring’ to your wardrobe, please by a pair of heels from Nicholas Kirkwood instead.

Heels & Hotdogs – Memorial Day ‘09

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

screenshot 012 Heels & Hotdogs Memorial Day 09This year, in honor of Memorial Day, my boyfriend and I are hosting our 1st annual Heels & Hotdog party, which we are currently getting ready for.

We’re basically modeling this one after one we had for Labor Day a while ago, but are upping the ante this year (but just by a bit).

In my mind, there are only a few key ingredients you need for any party that include:

  1. good friends (and no drama)
  2. good drinkssangria is a party favorite of mine, which my guests always seem to enjoy too
  3. guacamole – and lots of it. of course there can be other food too…
  4. good music - I like music that mirrors the vibe of the party. Upbeat and excited in the beginning, crowd favorites in the middle, and more sexy, chill music towards the end…
  5. location, location, location – any place is a great place for a gathering, but keep in mind the comfort of your guests while planning

For this year’s Heels & Hotdogs soiree, we’ve also added an attire request of ‘white’ – yes, highly original for Memorial Day, I know, but it is always more fun to get dressed according to a theme and makes the party more on an event.

We also used evite which makes it easy to keep track of which guests are coming from both his side and mine.

guacamole2iv 500x374 300x224 Heels & Hotdogs Memorial Day 09Although there is a lot of work that goes into hosting a party, it is always worth it if you do it right and try to have fun during every stage of the party preparation – remember that you wanted to throw a party and that what will really make it fun is you and your attitude. Dress up, have fun, try to address the little things that come up, but don’t let them drive you crazy. For our party I’ll be wearing an all white Abaeté dress and some fabulous heels…

What are you doing this Memorial Day? Having a party of your own?

Dear Diary…the Elle Shoe Diaries

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

screenshot 031 300x211 Dear Diary...the Elle Shoe DiariesI don’t particularly swoon over all of the millions of street-style blogs out there, but I am enjoying ELLE’s shoe diary series currently on their blog. Nothing too fancy or crazy, just simple pictures of the shoes that staff members are wearing – like the Givenchy boots to the left, which were spotted on Whitney Vargas, ELLE Senior Fashion News Editor.

Some of them are rather good, although my little collection might give those editors a run for their money…Hmm, maybe I should do a little shoe diary of my own once the weather gets a little better and I can start wearing things other than my wellies. Guess you’ll just have to check back and see. Xx

Augusten Burroughs – Anything but Dry

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

dry augusten burroughs 199x300 Augusten Burroughs Anything but DryJust wanted to say that I haven’t really read a book in a long time and after picking up Augusten Burroughs’ memoir, Dry, I don’t know why I ever stopped.

I’m absolutely loving this book and would suggest it to anyone, except perhaps my wife since she doesn’t drink and wouldn’t really be able to relate to this…but then again, who knows. Perhaps I’ll write more about it once I finish, but don’t hold your breath. Just go buy the book – or any book for that case. Just read something again beyond the ‘where to buy’ credits of ELLE or British Vogue.

I read Running with Scissors and Sellevision, but am enjoying Dry the most so far…

And Speaking of Topshop…

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Did you see Style.com’s Kate Questionnaire on the lovely Kate Moss?

I love that she’s reading Roald Dahl’s Switch Bitch because I love Roald Dahl and have perhaps read too much of his adult fiction, but I hate that she said she receives her inspiration for her Topshop collection from her imagination.

The Little Things

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Why do some Starbucks offer sugar via sugar pours and others expect you to rip open those annoying little packs of sugars? And what does it say about me when I receive an overwhelming sense of relief at the first sight of a sugar pour?
