Music Appreciation – A Night at Carnegie Hall

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Inside Carnegie HallAlthough Fashion Week is alive and well (or, sort of – more of this later), I ended up at Carnegie Hall on Monday night for a duo piano concert.

Lately the only music I’ve been listening to is Lady Gaga (at the office and OMG do I like it!) or Weezer (on the subways), and I can’t tell you how refreshing and grown-up it felt to listen to Juilliard-trained pianists play in Carnegie Hall.

The pieces played were commissioned; the composers were present to explain their work; almost everyone present was significantly older than me. The music was really dramatic and unlike any piano music I had heard before – it was almost violent at times and what made this especially interesting for me is that the two pianists were actually married and I felt as if I was watching them fight, make up, make love, and then skip off happily into the sunset.

I have never had a deep desire to play a musical instrument, but seeing two professional musicians playing so passionately made me wish I could do the same (although I am quite positive that even with years of training, my fingers could never, ever move as fast as they need to).

Like a Virgin? No, just another Material Girl

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Madonna for Louis VuittonMadonna does Louis Vuitton.

Hmm…Want to know a secret? I’ve always had a slight soft spot of Louis Vuitton and admit to spending at least one month of my life in a constant daze over that gorgeous red and blue ombre dress that Sasha wore back on the Fall ‘07 runway

To me, Louis Vuitton is something to cherish. Something, that when you wear it, other people should stop on the street and ask, “Who’s that girl?!” It’s something that you see in Vogue. Something that is on the arm of every material girl.

Maybe I just need to open my heart to these ads, but at first glance they just don’t justify my love of Louis over the years. Perhaps it’s just time that Madonna take a bow.

(p.s. I know this post is totally ridiculous, but I couldn’t help myself and am running on little to no sleep)

Random Musings during the AMAs

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

And now, some of my very random musings during tonight’s 2008 American Music Awards:

  • Jimmy Kimmel is just not a good host and he looks almost cross-eyed tonight
  • AHH! I missed half of it?! Damn. I should get TiVo.
  • Beyonce’s black and white sort of Viktor & Rolf-meets-Gareth Pugh jacket is hot. She’s awesome. I want her body. I love her new song Single Ladies – no wonder Jay-Z finally put a ring on it. And her back-up dancers? Damn.
  • Wait a sec…I know that dress! Is Mariah Carey actually wearing the same Dolce dress that Kim from The Real Housewives of Atlanta wore to DeShawn’s Night of a Thousand Stars gala event? Didn’t anyone tell her? Oh, and why is poor Nick Cannon helping her down from the stairs and kissing her hand? I guess it’s meant to be sweet?
  • Woah – Natasha Bedingfield should fire her stylist. The hair and the ill-fitting tux is awful; the red dress is just ok at best. How old is she anyway? Is the The Hills on?
  • The Pussy Cat Dolls should not wear patent leather – too obvious and way too shiny
  • Rihanna looks like a cupcake getting ready to marry Karl Lagerfeld in her founcy Giambattista Valli-like layered dress. Cute, but too short. Hate the gloves.
  • Now she’s wearing a crystal eye-patch for her performance for the Justin Timberlake-written song, Rehab? Really Rihanna, we know you’re cool, but the eye-patch, spikes, chains, faux-hock, big flame bursts – it’s all just a little much don’t you think? She doesn’t still need to try that hard – or does she?
  • The Jonas Brothers really are pretty cute boys.
  • Alicia Keys looks lovely and sounds great – but why does she keep bringing her purse up on stage each time she accepts an award? She’s either the new face of Judith Leiber or must be expecting a really important call.
  • Annie Lenox is awesome, no wonder my mom used to listen to her all the time.
  • Kanye West needs a haircut.
  • There are soo many Disney artists out now. I feel old. Miley Cyrus is really just turning 16?! I feel really old. Taylor Swift is odd looking, but still pretty. I should really put on a moisturizing mask now…
  • Chris Brown just won artist of the year? Really?
  • Ok, now I want ice cream.

See below for pictures and judge for yourself…

RIP TRL: The End of an Era

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

RIP TRL: Britney Spears Baby One More Time #1 Video of All TimeToday I ordered pizza, played with my new bangs, and munched on Doritos while watching MTV’s TRL Total Final Live! – a special presentation celebrating 10 fabulous years of TRL.

Carson Daly was back to host the final episode with Damien Fahey and the whole show quickly became one big happy reunion.

Britney Spears was dubbed the ‘Queen of TRL’ and Baby One More Time was chosen as the most important video in TRL history. Beyonce gave an amazingly bootylicious performance in a leather jacket that was totally bananas. Kid Rock stopped by while smoking and drinking. Miley Cyrus was there and was so annoying that they kept her in the photo booth. Puffy/Puff Daddy/P.Diddy/Diddy/Etc added one more appearance to his list on the show, this time he even pretended to cry. Ludacris performed with Nelly and Snoop. 50 cent brought the house down in a bedazzled red leather jacket. And OMG – do you remember the ‘I wanna be a VJ’ contest and the winner Jesse Camp?! Yep, he was there too, although he didn’t look quite as weird as he first did years ago. Even Backstreet was back (and now I’m sitting here happily singing “I want it that way!”).

Hmm…I guess MTV really is finished with music…no wonder they recently launched MTVMusic.com. Maybe they needed to make room for Whitney Port’s new ‘reality’ show The City. Anyway, in honor of the last episode ever of TRL, let’s take a look at what a few past and current MTV TRL VJs are up to now:

  • Carson Daly – now hosts Last Call with Carson Daly on NBC
  • Damien Fahey – is also a drummer and possibly my future husband
  • Vanessa Minnillo – the former Miss Teen USA wore a starry-eyed surprise to the finale, is currently dating Nick Lachey, hosting the new reality competition called True Beauty, and also working on various acting projects
  • Susie Castillo – this former Miss USA is now the spokesperson for Neutrogena, is the host of ABC Family’s America’s Prom Queen, and is starting to pop up on shows and in movies
  • Dave Holmes – the guys who came in second on MTV’s first I Wanna Be a VJ contest is now an actor and even made it on a show I find ridiculously funny, Reno 911
  • Hilarie Burton – she won a chance to report live from the VMA carpet in 2000 which led to hosting duties on TRL and can now be seen on the WB’s One Tree Hill as Peyton
  • La La Vasquez -former DJ turned VJ, La La is now married to Carmelo Anthony and has an adorable son – she was also recently photographed for Sports Illustrated
  • Quddus – this cutie is (surprise, surprise!) busy working on an acting career

Even though I haven’t watched TRL in years, I’m going to miss it. For a look at the night’s fashion hits & misses, see what the ever-so-kind ladies at Jezebel have to say…

Ahhhh Yeah! MTVMusic.com is Alive and Kickin’

Friday, November 7th, 2008

MTVMusic.com launches today and I love it!Anyone who knows me, knows that I love my MTV – have since I was about 14 and I probably always will – yes, the Hills, True Life, all of it really except for TRL (because I’m not 12), Next, and Parental Control. And even though I love the reality programing, I really do miss watching hour upon hour of music videos (and yes, I know MTV2 exists and whatnot, but I just don’t watch triple-digit channels).

Well today MTV launched MTVMusic.com and it has already set my morning back by about 30 minutes! You can watch practically any music video on the new super clean site and comment on the videos directly – and they load pretty quickly which is nice.

Ahh…I feel like all is finally going right in this world: Obama is our President-Elect and MTV is back to being MTV (at least online anyway).

Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight Tonight
Green Day – Longview
Weezer – El Scorcho
Beastie Boys – Fight for Your Right (To Party)
Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood
Madonnna – Open Your Heart
a-ha – Take on Me

the men I’ve had, the music I have…

Friday, October 17th, 2008

chris carrabba1 241x300 the men Ive had, the music I have...One of the great things about my relationships has been the music I’ve inherited over the years. Through different boyfriends, I have been introduced to everyone from The Ataris to Rachel Yamagata, Flogging Molly to Dashboard Confessional, Beastie Boys, and most recently Alexi Murdoch and Elliot Smith.

Of course there have also been many relationships that I have taken very little from in terms of music (yes, you guys who listen the to electro-clash and house music while in an actual house), but even so, each person has exposed me to something new and for that, I am grateful.

A lot can be said for a shared interest in music. Music sets, enhances and alters our moods whether we’re in the office, at home, in the subway, dining or even shopping – and if you find someone who enjoys listening to the same things as you do, well, that’s a connection right there (and yet another thing that I’d say is worth listening to).

Now just as a scent can capture (and later remind us) of a moment in time, so can a song. There are certain songs that always remind me of certain nights – and there are certain moments within certain songs that remind me of very particular experiences. And even though I might not be able to relive those moments, I’m happy to have them carefully preserved through music.

My Current Ex-Inspired Playlist:
Miss Misery – Elliot Smith
Fix You – Coldplay
Breathe – Alexi Murdoch
Warwick Avenue – Duffy
Not Tonight – Tegan & Sara
Again I Go Unnoticed – Dashboard Confessional
Breath Me – Sia

No such thing as bad PR? Really?

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

I first heard Heidi Montag’s new single ‘Fashion’ a week or so ago on E!, I thought the same thing as everyone else – OH MY GOD.

For whatever reason, I was on PerezHilton.com today and ended up listening to the song once more – realizing that not only is this a terrible song, but that it is the worse pr plug any designer could ever have. Listen to Heidi’s ‘Fashion’ on Perez here and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Read selected lyrics below…

I am, I’m too fab-u-lous
I’m so fierce that it’s so nuts
I live, to be model thin
Dress me, I’m your manne-quin

J’adore Vivienne. I really want. Pucci, Fendi, and Cardin. Valentino, Armani too. Madame love them Jimmy Choo

Ohhhh Ohhhhh La La La
We love designer

I need, some new sti-le-ttos
Can’t walk, down the street in those
You are, who you wear it’s true
A girl’s just as hot as the shoes she choose

J’adore Weitzman I really want. Louis, Dolce Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, eh ou. Madame love those Manolo

Fashion put it all on me
Don’t you want to see these clothes on meh
Fashion put it all on me
I am anyone you want me to be

If were a designer mentioned in this song, I would sue her. And can she even recognize Alexander McQueen?! She’s trying to do something funny and fabulous like Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’, but she’s just too lame.

I love my MTV

Monday, June 16th, 2008

mtv I love my MTVI love MTV. I love all of the awful reality TV. I love The Hills, Made, America’s Next Dance Crew, True Life, etc. And I love love love My Super Sweet 16. I swear I will watch MTV until I die.

Right now MTV is running a My Super Sweet 16 special and Sean Kingston is on celebrating his super 18th birthday. What?! You don’t know who Sean Kingston is? Well, he is the young Jamaican pop singer who sings that absolutely fabulous song ‘Beautiful Girls’ that I first heard while watching The Hills. If you don’t know it – listen to it now.

Speaking of The Hills – Do you love the new commercials that feature awful Spencer & Heidi and Pete Wentz? I do. In fact, they almost make me like Speidi, and that’s scary.

About a month ago I went to an afterparty at 1Oak for some film showing at Tribeca and Spencer & Heidi were there and looking ridiculously blond. They were seated in the corner and there was a huge spotlight beaming down on them. So obnoxious and so bizarre.

I would write more, but a new episode of My Super Sweet 16 just came on…
