Tonight I was deeply enjoying MTV’s Bromance – the show where the absolutely adorable Brody Jenner is looking to add another guy to his entourage – and then…
The City came on. Damn. It.
The thing is, everyone and their brother has been asking me what I thought of the first episode of The City (seriously), and (up until about 30 minutes ago) I hadn’t seen it and had no intention of seeing it. Although I’ve been a steady viewer of The Hills, everything about The City is just a little too close to home for me and turned me off.
First of all, the name annoys me. The City? Just The City? What about Sex and the City? Is Whitey so boring that there is nothing else interesting about the show other than New York itself? Just image SATC centered around Charlotte, minus Samantha. Yawn. Have any of you ever read Samuel R. Delany’s Trouble on Triton? Really great book. If you have, compare Whitney to Bron Helstrom.
Also, the city happens to be my city – and in this show it looks waaay too shiny, clean, and un-New York all around.
And Whitney doesn’t really work in fashion, I do. I’ve really worked fashion week and when Whitney just stands around backstage looking pretty, well, that is not working fashion week. People who really work fashion week look like Kelly Cutrone (who is by far the best ‘character’ on the show).
Hell, I’ve even been on dates at the same places Whitney is going to! Also, did any one else notice Whitney’s affinity for that backless dress silhouette? Is it DVF? I’ll figure it out and get back to you on that…
Oh! And what the hell is with her and Olivia Palermo acting like they don’t know who each other are? Are you kidding me? No, actually, you are not. At all. And I also think it’s weird how, over dinner at Phillipe or somewhere, Olivia and her ugly guy friend are talking about Whitney as if she’s Tai from Clueless. Like Whitney really needs a makeover and their help to keep her from falling into the horrible downtown crowd.
So there you go – you’ve all been asking and that is what I think of The City. I’ll watch the damn show again and will keep you posted on my feelings as heart-pounding episodes continue.
