Sex and the City: The Movie: The Review
I don’t have too many posts on this blog yet, but I do have at least two recent ones about SATC…Now, this isn’t supposed to be a SATC blog - and I’ve actually been trying very hard to limit my entries about it, but hey, you write what you know and you write what you love.
Anyway, I saw Sex and the City: The Movie last night and fell in love with the whole show all over again. I entered the theater with good friends and my darling boyfriend, wearing a big silk flower pin and (as my son calls them) my “fancy shoes,” light pink satin Valentino heels complete with feathers, bows and swarovski crystals.
After getting an Icee, we sat in our seats, looked for other dressed up girls, and waited. The whole theater was alive with excitement and buzz; after months of foreplay - via June’s issue of VOGUE, theatrical trailers, images leaked the same day as shooting, etc - we were finally arriving at the climax. When the opening music started, my heart jumped.
It opens happy, so happy in fact that it’s sort of cheesy. It’s a celebration of SATC, the characters, New York, all of it, and right away it delivers everything we’ve been hoping for and want: marriage, the perfect apartment, fantastic clothes, happiness, beauty, love, and Big. And I swear this is within the first 30 minutes or so.
And while it does give us what we want, the movie makes fun of it at the same time.
Life is just too good and things are a little too perfect…until, of course, everything comes crashing down. My boyfriend felt the movie was really dark and depressing for a long time, which I sort of agree with. All the mopping and dwelling on things could have been cut down a bit, but overall the movie gives you what you think you wanted, then gives you the story, and then gives you back all of the things you love about SATC.
While I truly loved the movie (and can’t wait to see it again), there was a little too much shoved into it: as Anthony said, “Its like shoving a cream puff into a keyhole.” The Vogue shoot and the girls attending fashion week was fun, but just felt thrown in. And was Jennifer Hudson’s role really necessary? I liked what she brought to the film (and couldn’t believe the HUGE plug-in for bag, borrow, or steal), but thought the movie would have been fine without her.
I love the scene in Carrie’s apartment when she’s trying on old outfits (especially when she put on the tutu!!). I love Samantha’s humping dog. I love Samantha’s speech at the rehearsal dinner and really just love her in general. I’m a little sad things fizzled between her and Smith, but if Samantha was going to leave him then she should have split earlier in the film and then given us what we really wanted - lots of sex with lots of different men. I was annoyed at Miranda for most of the movie and she just seemed out of character. And, well, you know, Carrie and Big, especially when they’re hurting and depressed, can just be exhausting. The movie also just needed more sex in general.
The only character I was really concerned for was Charlotte. There were all of these “death” rumors floating around the movie, and I was sure she would miscarry or something awful would happen to her baby (and I just don’t think I could have handled that). There was one tragic thing that happened to the poor baby - her name, Rose: when it was announced in the movie, girls all around us cooed and sighed. Our row cringed and I said something like, “oh brother,” or “are you kidding me? So typical.” or “that’s stupid.”
Oh, and what was with Enid? She’s supposed to be 60 and represent the old guard, but still, she couldn’t have looked more un-vogue and just plain awful.
Anyway, although they squeezed in a little too much into the movie, I was very emotionally satisfied at the end of the showing and left the theater completely elated, on cloud 9, and ready for a Cosmo.
So, What did you think about it? What was your favorite scene? Favorite outfit?
One more thing - You loved Carrie’s blue Manolos? They’re available at the Manolo Blahnik Manhattan boutique on June 9, 08 and will only set you back around $885.

Is Rose a bad name? It seems alright to me. I bet it’s an homage to Golden Girls, which is sort of like a senior version of Sex in the City.

1) Favorite Scene: Dante in the shower… (J.K. Wink). You’ve got to be kidding though, I’m not picking just one. No ma’am! I loved every minute, but my favorite minutes are as follows…
*** Carrie comes home to the apartment and Big “colors outside the lines”. It was so sexy! It was also the first time I’d ever really seen their relationship in that “shade”.
*** Samantha becomes a colorful bidder and toast maker.
*** Samantha says “I love you, but I love me more”!!! (It was one of my fav lines in the show too.)
*** Charlotte telling Big off and his reaction…. PRICELESS!
2) Favorite Outfits: The turqoise dress with the really long sleeves, the purple & red bridesmaid dresses, the Oscar de la Renta wedding dress, the dress Carrie wears to look at the apartment, the teal blouse Charlotte is wearing when she is with Harry and Rose cuddling. The outfit Miranda wore on the Brooklyn Bridge…. too many to count.
You were so right about Enid. She looked so frumpy and bloated. It makes me wonder if Candace Bergen is well or not. I would not have even recognized her!
I loved it and it made me remember what it was like when I first got here! I LOVED LOVED LOVED that they all ate a Juniors! My fave!
