RIP TRL: The End of an Era

RIP TRL: Britney Spears Baby One More Time #1 Video of All TimeToday I ordered pizza, played with my new bangs, and munched on Doritos while watching MTV’s TRL Total Final Live! - a special presentation celebrating 10 fabulous years of TRL.

Carson Daly was back to host the final episode with Damien Fahey and the whole show quickly became one big happy reunion.

Britney Spears was dubbed the ‘Queen of TRL’ and Baby One More Time was chosen as the most important video in TRL history. Beyonce gave an amazingly bootylicious performance in a leather jacket that was totally bananas. Kid Rock stopped by while smoking and drinking. Miley Cyrus was there and was so annoying that they kept her in the photo booth. Puffy/Puff Daddy/P.Diddy/Diddy/Etc added one more appearance to his list on the show, this time he even pretended to cry. Ludacris performed with Nelly and Snoop. 50 cent brought the house down in a bedazzled red leather jacket. And OMG - do you remember the ‘I wanna be a VJ’ contest and the winner Jesse Camp?! Yep, he was there too, although he didn’t look quite as weird as he first did years ago. Even Backstreet was back (and now I’m sitting here happily singing “I want it that way!”).

Hmm…I guess MTV really is finished with music…no wonder they recently launched MTVMusic.com. Maybe they needed to make room for Whitney Port’s new ‘reality’ show The City. Anyway, in honor of the last episode ever of TRL, let’s take a look at what a few past and current MTV TRL VJs are up to now:

  • Carson Daly - now hosts Last Call with Carson Daly on NBC
  • Damien Fahey - is also a drummer and possibly my future husband
  • Vanessa Minnillo - the former Miss Teen USA wore a starry-eyed surprise to the finale, is currently dating Nick Lachey, hosting the new reality competition called True Beauty, and also working on various acting projects
  • Susie Castillo - this former Miss USA is now the spokesperson for Neutrogena, is the host of ABC Family’s America’s Prom Queen, and is starting to pop up on shows and in movies
  • Dave Holmes - the guys who came in second on MTV’s first I Wanna Be a VJ contest is now an actor and even made it on a show I find ridiculously funny, Reno 911
  • Hilarie Burton - she won a chance to report live from the VMA carpet in 2000 which led to hosting duties on TRL and can now be seen on the WB’s One Tree Hill as Peyton
  • La La Vasquez -former DJ turned VJ, La La is now married to Carmelo Anthony and has an adorable son - she was also recently photographed for Sports Illustrated
  • Quddus - this cutie is (surprise, surprise!) busy working on an acting career

Even though I haven’t watched TRL in years, I’m going to miss it. For a look at the night’s fashion hits & misses, see what the ever-so-kind ladies at Jezebel have to say…

Ahhhh Yeah! MTVMusic.com is Alive and Kickin’

Friday, November 7th, 2008

MTVMusic.com launches today and I love it!Anyone who knows me, knows that I love my MTV - have since I was about 14 and I probably always will - yes, the Hills, True Life, all of it really except for TRL (because I’m not 12), Next, and Parental Control. And even though I love the reality programing, I really do miss watching hour upon hour of music videos (and yes, I know MTV2 exists and whatnot, but I just don’t watch triple-digit channels).

Well today MTV launched MTVMusic.com and it has already set my morning back by about 30 minutes! You can watch practically any music video on the new super clean site and comment on the videos directly - and they load pretty quickly which is nice.

Ahh…I feel like all is finally going right in this world: Obama is our President-Elect and MTV is back to being MTV (at least online anyway).

Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight
Green Day - Longview
Weezer - El Scorcho
Beastie Boys - Fight for Your Right (To Party)
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood
Madonnna - Open Your Heart
a-ha - Take on Me

Late Night with Mary-Kate Olsen

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Mary-Kate Olsen was on Conan O’Brien to promote her new book ‘Influence’ (co-authored with sis Ashely) and she might just be a little too cool for late-night tv. And as hard as he tried, Conan seemed thoroughly uninterested in interviewing the “fashion icon” and sort of unsure of what he could even talk to MK about - At least he got to ask her questions, which according to Racked (and thank you Adam for pointing this out) was something that no one was able to do at the book signing in Union Square.

And as uninterested as Conan seemed, well, MK seemed ever more so (and wow does she slouch). Now Conan tried to ask her fashion-focused questions and even asked her to style him, but when he asked about the string she had tied around her head (which he clearly thought looked odd and found difficult not to mention), she sort of waved it off and said something along the lines of “I don’t even know what this is! Maybe a necklace?” I’m sure she knew very well what it was, but that it seemed somehow cooler to America for her not to know.

I thought that this might be an interesting interview, but unfortunately (like MK’s choice of outfit on this particular day) it fell flat.

Auf Wiedersehen Project Runway, Season 5

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I’ve never been that into Project Runway, but I have been watching this season and today saw the finale (a day late, I know).

I’m bummed that Jerell didn’t make it to the finale, but I guess there is really nothing to do about that. I am, however, very glad that Leanne won - her collection was absolutely beautiful, especially the first look (and even though she said the top steamed to nearly two sizes larger, I thought it looked perfect). I would love to wear any of it, although I must say that for as much crap as they (especially Nina Garcia) gave Kenley about her painted dress looking a little too ‘Balenciaga‘, Leanne’s whole collection definitely brought Valentino to my mind.

So die-hard Project Runway fans - what did you think of the finale? Did it live up to your expectations? Do you think Leanne deserved to win?

Who do you think should have won Project Runway, Season 5?

The Bloody Fabulous Hills

Monday, October 13th, 2008

I love the boys at OverthinkingIt.com, and Matt’s latest movie poster is absolutely lovely. If you hate Spencer Pratt, then you’ll enjoy this…

And speaking of The Hills, on tonight’s episode ‘who to choose’ we actually got a little action. Audrina might have finally found herself a good guy, an cute Aussie. He’ll probably last for a week or so and then she’ll be back to bad-for-her Justin Bobby. At least it was better than last week.

And unfortunately, I also watched the damn after-show show thing that MTV insists on airing periodically. First of all, why can’t someone help out the female host? I know MTV has a bunch of stylists so why can’t one of them convince the girl to cut her tranny-looking tresses and slim down her look a little bit? Anyway, the show is just so unnecessary and ridiculous - Stephanie Pratt was on the show to tell the world how great of a human being Spencer really is and how she wants to have her own handbag collection (can you say ‘ew’?). Oh well, there goes yet another 30 minutes of my life I’ll never get back…

The Hills are, um, boring.

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

I’m already bored with The Hills this season. In fact, I almost forgot it was on tonight. Here’s what happened tonight:

Lauren: blah blah blah.
Whitney: nothing, pretty, nothing.
Lo: I wish people liked me! I’m blond too!
Audrina: Please love me Justin Bobby!
Justin Bobby: Whatever, I’m the coolest thing about this show.
Heidi: I’m so torn between a happy, normal life and the biggest loser on Earth!
Holly (Heidi’s annoying sister): Look everyone! I’m the new Stephanie!

The Rachel Zoe Project is Bananas!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Rachel ZoeNew guilty pleasure? The Rachel Zoe Project on Bravo (new episodes on Tuesday’s at 10pm)

Brad is adorable, Taylor is totally bitchy and has the driest personality in the world (but I’d want her on my team), and Rachel is just great.

Why do I love Rachel? Because she seems to have a genuine love unhealthy obsession with clothing - and she actually pays attention during shows and has something wonderful to say about each designer. She also seemed truly inspired by the runways and almost watches the dresses float down the catwalk the way a hawk watches a mouse run across a dry desert floor.

She also shops like a maniac every second she gets - and if I were her I would as well.

The thing is, styling is really difficult.
Wait - let me rephrase that - styling, as in putting an outfit together, is not terribly difficult, but building a serious career as a stylist is. It requires years and years of dedication, hard work, talent, persistence, and an adaptive personality. It also requires endless knowledge of fashion history, designers, and trends…and waaay too much coffee from Starbucks.

Want a little Zoe style? Start watching the show, read her book Style A to Zoe, throw on a vintage fur, and then start saying ‘Shut up!’ and ‘Bananas!’

Grey Days Ahead…

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Damn Grey’s Anatomy. This is one of the shows I love to hate. It is also one of the shows that makes me want to fall in love again. Actually, everything is making me want to fall in love again - like today’s weather, sweaters, the empty spot in my bed.

Sometimes I feel like I will never be married, never have that dream life where I come home after work to my sexy husband cooking dinner and waiting for me, ready with a glass of wine; sometimes I think I’ll never experience a really extraordinary kiss again; sometimes I think I’ve let that perfect someone go. Sometimes I just think I’m ridiculously dramatic. Maybe I’m getting my period. Or maybe it’s all that Coldplay I’ve been listening to lately and those damn previews for Nights in Rodanthe.

Anyway, this season’s premier of Grey’s ended with Meredith’s voice-over telling us that reality is always so much more interesting than ‘happily ever after’. True Mere, but sometimes happily ever after doesn’t sound so bad.

Love, Chanel, and SNL

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Coco ChanelAfter a week that seemed to last over a month, it was refreshing to stay in and flip between Lifetime’s Coco Chanel and SNL with Michael Phelps and Lil Wayne.

At SNL Phelps stumbled a bit, but was endearing none-the-less and managed to look pretty good in the still shots. I just wish he would tell Lil Wayne to wear his jeans above his ass - I realize that saying this might make me seem old (trust that I am not), but I am certainly not ready for that particular trend to rule the streets again.

Coco Chanel certainly gets better as the movie goes on, but there is no denying that this is a Lifetime movie - tango, kissing in the snow, war, etc. All of the scenes with her on the beach are gorgeous and filtered just right. Lots of love in her life, that’s for sure - and that’s certainly something I’m lacking in mine.

Talking to my sister on the phone today she asked if I was dating anyone…yet. I said I had only broken up with my last boyfriend a month and a half ago (or something like that as I’m actually not too sure when it happened). She said it seemed like a lot longer. I told her that I was really not interested in dating at the moment, not putting it out there, and that if and when I do decide to date that it won’t be hard to do so.

Now, watching Coco Chanel is not really making me want a tweed jacket, but rather making me want to fall in love again, be seduced, be wooed. I want to meet the love of my life, or have him come and sweep me off my feet, realizing that I am the love of his.

It is also making me want to start wearing hats.

90210 Sucks

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

And now I know why I didn’t watch 90210 in middle/high school and why I won’t be watching the new series…

  1. Shenae Grimes is the actress who plays Annie Wilson, who I guess is supposed to be the star of the show. The girl looks more anorexic then Allegra Versace and I’m not particularly fond of her face (that sounds mean, sorry) - she also just seems a little weak to carry the show in general (but that might be from malnutrition). And the thing is, the producers clearly want people talking about her weight - they even show her pushing around a salad the size of a quarter during a cafeteria scene… I’m actually becoming more disgusted with each new scene. Can anyone give this girl a frappuccino, or a donut, or something? Hey! I’ve got a great idea - someone should invite her to a show at the tents, then she could take advantage of the brilliant health booth the CFDA is setting up!
  2. The ‘pig prank’ they had the boys do was totally lifted from a real prank that probably hundred of kids have done, which was also shown in MTV’s new series High School Stories
  3. The overall dialog and plot is crap
  4. And do they wear Forever 21 in Beverly Hills? And what’s with the hair? Stylist, anyone?!

I’ll take The Hills over 90210 any day - seriously, I’d rather watch a full hour of The Hills with Spencer Pratt sitting on his Stephanie’s couch doing nothing but growing out his scraggly beard than sit through another episode of 90210.

Addicted to Love: David Duchovny

Monday, September 1st, 2008

The second season of Californication hasn’t debuted yet, but David Duchovny is making news today by checking into rehab to undergo treatment for sex addiction. You’ve got to wonder if playing the sexy, dark, Hank Moody has something to do with it. I wonder what being addicted to sex is really like…

Exciting News from the World of Bad TV

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

1. Super Cr3w won America’s Best Dance Crew (and I love this show even I can’t even dance) - and something like 39 million people voted. Each of the crews have such tremendous talent, heart, and serious hip-hop style that I couldn’t emulate even if I really tried. I actually cried when crew Fanny Pack was eliminated a week or two ago (yes, I cry easily).

2. The Cho Show, Margaret Cho’s new show on VH1 is awesome. She’s totally wacko, but I love her. I actually saw her perform back in Honolulu and she was unbelievably funny. I wonder if she’s friends with Chelsea Handler…

3. The Rachel Zoe Project has started airing and although I haven’t seen it yet, Annie tells me its entertaining.

4. I saw the last half of Glam God today - and that might have been enough. Hosted by Vivica A. Fox, this is supposedly supposed to be the stylist version of Project runway where people compete to become the next celebrity stylist, but it isn’t really interesting at all. And no one on the show really has good style.
