Goyard’s Luggage for Life

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Goyard for CurieWhen I became pregnant I went on a mad search for the perfect baby bag…so trust me when I tell you not to fall for the special bags with insulated pouches and pockets everywhere (they’re too damn bulky) - instead just go the Barneys and treat yourself to the standard Goyard tote (which will look great hanging from your bugaboo stroller). I promise you’ll love it from the day you buy it to the day your kid leaves for college.

But if you really want a great Goyard and aren’t knocked up (or planning to be) then splurge Monday, Nov. 17th at 7pm, when 21 very special Goyard bags go up for auction at Christies to benefit L’Institut Curie.

Goyard is auctioning off 21 unique bags - each one personalized by a different French personality, from Catherine Deneuve to Audrey Tautou and Vanessa Paradis. All the bags have been designed using the colors ofare L’Institut Curie (black or orange), and all proceeds go to support the cancer research of the organization.

And if you just happen to be in the City of Light between Nov. 3rd to the 15th, stop by La Maison Goyard in Paris 233 Saint-Honore to preview the collection before the sale. My favorites are the ones by Audrey Marnay and Sarah Biasini.

Step inside the world of Chanel…

Monday, October 20th, 2008

The leaves might be falling off the trees, but Chanel’s Mobile Art has just landed in New York’s Central Park.

Housed in a portable futuristic pavilion created by architect Zaha Hadid, Chanel’s Mobile Art exhibit features a Fabrice Bousteau-curated collection of art all inspired by the iconic Chanel 2.55 quilted leather handbag. I’m curious to see how each of the 18 international contemporary artists (including Blue Noses, Daniel Buren, David Levinthal, Fabrice Hyber, Loris Cecchini, Michael Lin, Pierre & Gilles, Subudh Gupta, Slyvie Fleury - and even Yoko Ono) will interpret the elements (the quilted leather, the chain handle, and the double C closure) that all give the bag its unique, undeniable identity.

The exhibit has already passed through Hong Kong and Tokyo, and will now spend a couple of weeks in Manhattan before then heading off to London, Moscow, and finally, Paris.

Although not really a Chanel girl, I’m very excited to visit the mobile art exhibit - you should be too - especially since its completely free! See below for details:

Chanel’s Mobile Art Exhibit
October 20th - November 9th
Located at Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield (enter at 72nd street)
Admission is free, but you have to reserve a time slot at chanel-mobileart.com

Black and White and Balenciaga

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Black and White Balenciagi at BarneysI sort of love/hate this Balenciaga bag, but right now I’m loving it - especially because I think it will look so perfect with all of the navy and black that I only want to be wearing lately.

I’m not usually one for the obvious ‘it’ bags, but for some reason I keep coming back to this one. I have a feeling that the leather is not the best, but whatever. It’s large enough to hold everything and even comes with a removable shoulder strap so you’ll be able to tote it all with ease.

This latticed beauty is exclusively at Barneys & it’ll set you back around $2,695

‘I am SOO a plastic bag’ Bag

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Anya Hindmarch for Target Black Python BagAnya Hindmarch, the darling British designer made famous with last summer’s (or was it two summers ago?) ‘I’m not a plastic bag’ bag, has paired up with Target to now bring us (drum roll please) …a bunch of plastic bags.

I’m all for designer collaborations, but this is just too ironic - don’t ya think? A little too ironic, yeah I really do think.

Anyway, the entire collection is now available for pre-order at Target.com

Hell, if some poor YSL intern is on the streets and passes one my way, I won’t say no.

A lesson on Hermès: Birkin vs Kelly

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Can you tell the difference between Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags? I thought about this on Monday when watching The Hills, seeing Heidi’s bag, and then realizing that I wasn’t sure which one it was.

I’ve never become obsessed with Hermès bags simply because they’ve never been in my price range (which is why I never really took the time to notice the difference in styles), but I do own a few of their scarves, twillys, a pair of lady gloves, and one of their fragrances. Since I didn’t know exactly which was which (and as a young fashionable person, I really should), I’ve put together a bit on the bags…

About both bags:

  • Prices for both begin around $7,000 and can go well beyond $50,000
  • Part of the price of all Hermès bags is the privilege to bring it into any boutique to be sent to Paris for a “spa treatment” where the bag, no matter how old or abused, will be bought back to the best possible condition…for an additional cost of several hundred dollars
  • Both bags can be customized to the buyers specifications
  • Locks and keys are number-coded
  • Lining is usually made of goat skin that matches the color of the exterior skin
  • Identifiable by their metal-tipped clasp, which can be closed with a tiny padlock (and the clasp’s hidden key often dangles from the handle in a leather sheath of its own)
  • Not sold online and never ever will be
  • Famous for their waiting lists - Remember on Sex and the City when Samantha used Lucy Liu’s name to score the red one faster?

The Hermès Kelly Bag:

  • Named after Grace Kelly
  • Became famous in 1956 when Grace Kelly (then Princess of Monaco) used one to shield her pregnant stomach from the prying eyes of the paparazzi
  • More formal than the Birkin
  • Comes in 5 different sizes (although possibly more from looking at the Fall runway show)
  • It takes a single craftsman about 18 hours to make one

The Hermès Birkin Bag:

  • Named after Jane Birkin (who has an interesting history with the company)
  • 5 Birkins are produced a week at the Hermès Atelier in Paris
  • More casual than the Kelly & has a slightly younger more bohemian appeal
  • With an open top, it is easier to open than the Kelly
  • Both Jay-Z and Lil’ Kim have both rapped about the Birkin

I think I’d go with a Birkin, but which one do you like? Do you know anyone who carries either a Birkin or a Kelly? Do you think they are worth the price

P.S. Want your own Kelly - for free? Go here, and then click on the little picture of the Kelly bag paper cut-out next to a pair of orange scissors. Nothing new, but fun for those of you who haven’t seen this before!

Fall into the GAP

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

So my last bag purchase was from the GAP and I sort of love it - although I didn’t at first. The thing is, I’ve always hated plain black bags and yet they’re just something every girl needs.

Anyway, I found this leather satchel at the GAP and bought it simply because I needed a black bag (although I definitely liked the lighter gray one better), it was only $150, its not too big, not too small, and has just the right amount of pockets inside. I’ve also gotten a bunch of compliments on it, which I would have never expect. It actually has a slightly understated rocker vibe…

Just saying that the next time you walk by the GAP, stop in. You never know. Shop all GAP bags here.

Wow. Comme des Garçons for Louis Vuitton

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Maybe I fall in love a little too easily (you might have noticed the excessive use of the word ‘love’ and the millions of little hearts on this blog), but I’ve fallen head over heels yet again…

Rei Kawakubo, founder and designer of Comme des Garçons, has reinvented Louis Vuitton and now I’m lovin’ LV - especially the bag shown here.

The exclusive collection features six one-off bags - all inspired by Rei Kawakubo’s early memories of the first Louis Vuitton store opening in Japan. She was fascinated by the image of French craftsmanship and art de vivre it projected. Using Louis Vuitton’s legendary monogram canvas, Kawakubo created two Party bags, customized the Papillon bag with animal charms, and added a rainbow of handles to the Mini HL. The collection also features two reedited iconic LV designs from the 70s – the Petit Marceau and the Sac 2 Poches.

The bags will only be available upon order starting September 4th, at the Louis Vuitton at Comme des Garçons store in Japan - no telephone or Internet orders will be taken. So, if you’ve just got to get hold of one of these little hotties, you’re going to have to pack your old bags first.

The Best Summer Handbags & Clutches

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

VBH, Louis Vuitton, Christian Louboutin, Bottega, Gambelle, Handbags, Clutches

I’m definitely a shoe girl, but lately I find myself checking out bags almost more than I’m checking out the heels clacking around the Manhattan streets. Many girls are really into their bags and I used to be one of them until I began destroying one after another (and unfortunately we’re talking about a Lady Dior, a soft white Bottega, and a lovely little one from Prada) and I finally became discouraged and turned to Kate Spade.

I know I should be wise and invest in a great black bag, but I’m simply not attracted to them. I like my accessories to have some life and stand out from the rest of my look. I want them functional, fun and attention-grabbing - especially in the summertime.

I must admit that I love Louis Vuitton’s Damier Speedy bag. even though it’s not that exciting. And although it’s also nothing new, I just think it’s one of the most perfect summer-in-the-city bags around. You can also never go wrong with Bottega Veneta, but I happen to really, really love the large red one available at NET-A-PORTER.

For summer nights out, we all know a great clutch is a must. Whether satin and sexy, a la Christian Louboutin, or something a bit more exotic in python from Gambelle or VBH, these clutches are something any girl is lucky to get a hold of.

What do you think - do you have a favorite bag for the summer?

Little Obsession: Frog Prince

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

New bag crush: Marc Jacobs Eve Flo Ranna Pouchette
Price: $795 at Barneys

I’m sort of annoyed at myself because I am really not a Marc Jacobs fan, but (for some reason) I keep posting things about/or involving his designs.

Anyway, this bag that really is adorable and after looking at it this weekend at Barneys, I’m now sort of obsessing over it (although the leather really isn’t the best). The thing about Marc Jacobs is that he is over the top and fun and crazy. He isn’t afraid about sending out into the world a little green bag embellished with a big golden frog with glowing emerald eyes, and I truly love that.

Maybe I am - gasp! - a Marc Jacobs fan after all.
